Being An Angry Person–Its Effects

Posted on: July 16th, 2008

Anger management programs have not been put in place to help you suppress your anger emotions. Suppressing your anger is in itself an anger problem that needs to be dealt with. Anger management programs are there to educate individuals on the effects of being an angry person so that they have the best way to express your anger so it doesn’t lead to destructive issues.

Expressing your anger with explosive outbursts can be tantamount to poking yourself in the eye. When you get angry more often than not, you do yourself great harm. Anger never does solve any problem and that is a fact.

You have got to motivate yourself in order to motivate others. If you do not know how, then it is time to browse through some self improvement books on how to go about it.

Read some self improvement books…Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

1. 21 Indispensable Qualities of Leadership: Becoming the Leader Others Will Follow John C. Maxwell
Why do some people consistently inspire others to follow their lead? In this self improvement book, the author identifies these top traits as character, charisma, commitment, communication, competence, courage, discernment, focus, generosity, initiative, listening, passion, positive attitude, problem-solving, relationships, responsibility, security, self-discipline, servanthood, teachability, and vision.

Maxwell breaks down leadership qualities into easy to understand character qualities. Character is what defines a leader, and these traits are what people of character have. A must-read for leaders in any position.

2. Discover Your Strengths - Marcus Buckingham
The self improvement book that helps you find what you are strong in and encourages you to work to make those stronger. That instead of working against what you know you’re good at. You can also take the personal survey that is in the book.

3. Five Patterns of Extraordinary Careers - Spencer Stuart
A remarkable book about how to stand out from your peers and have a better career. One lesson learned: It is better to ask for forgiveness after the fact than it is to ask for permission ahead of time.

4. Who Moved My Cheese? - Spencer Johnson
Of course, what book list would be complete without this self improvement book that is all about change. Another book that is well worth the listen, but also worth reading.

5. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Steven Covey
Another must have in your self improvement book collection. If you like to read a lot of books, you are practicing one of Covey’s habits, “sharpening the saw.”

6. How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci Discover Your Genius: How to Think Like History’s Ten Most Revolutionary Minds - Michael Gelb

This self improvement book helps you to think more creatively and be more artistic. These factors are important no matter what position you may be in.

7. The Brand You 50 Re-imagine Pursuit of Wow! Tom Peters

A motivational book urging readers to achieve more.

8. What Should I Do With My Life? Po Bronson

A self improvement book that tells us that it is okay not to know what you want to do. That even the people we think are completely happy may not be. And that we make our own happiness, it all depends on how you deal with it.

9. Rhinoceros Success Scott Alexander

This was recommended to me by my last manager. An incredibly quick read. The book is all about leading, and how sometimes you have to do the unpopular to make a difference and stand out as a leader. Be a rhino!

10. Advanced Rhinocerology Scott Alexander

A nice sequel to Rhinocerous Success that you will also enjoy. A few things it reminded me of is that leaders are often under attack from all sides, and it’s important to watch your own back because often nobody else will.

These are just some of the more popular self improvement books you can check out whenever you want answers to questions you have been keeping inside for too long.

Broken Hearts Still Mend

Posted on: July 2nd, 2008

Sweet Love Gone Sour

On impulse, you sense that love has shifted to a painful disconnect when your boyfriend becomes stumpeddealing with you. So you offer to leave, and the faster you run home the better. Deep inside, you yearn for a tender arm to restrain you to stay for a little while - for another of those addictive love-making. But none is coming. Instead, your man counts the money bills in his money clip - “Do you have enough for your plane ticket?” At least, he’s making your departure from his life certain and fast.

But that is the way some love affairs end, cruelly abrupt. There’s nothing you can do for now, but honey, you will live to tell the tale like billions did since Eve. Time will come you will be shopping with your bethroted for gold or leather money clips for his groomsmen and for your wedding reception. Okay, this idea is far-fetched now. You’d rather nurse your lovelorn heart. Bide your time, but don’t miss to recall that the sun still emits UV rays every new day.

Time To Move On

Your goodbye scene is as impersonal as having a root canal done by a dentist you won’t see again. On the way to the now familiar road to Boston’s Huff Memorial Airport, your achy breaky heart is just about to disintegrate. The bastard did not even offer to hold your hand at the airport until your flight is announced. It’s time to move on - physically and emotionally.

The tried and tested formula to scramble out of the pit is to keep yourself busy at home, work and play. But these out-of-the-box tips can hasten your emotional recovery.

* Don’t hurry to replace your ex just to show him you’re still a valuable commodity like those gold money clips.
* Hang out with friends but don’t weary them with your sob story.
* Tape your deep-seated emotions and listen to yourself on the micro cassette recorder repated - you will get bored and grasp that what you’re going through isn’t a phenomenon.
* Take a break; vacation this summer with your girl pals.
* Dine on your favorite chows and exercise to the hiphop sound.
* If the emotional pain persists, see a psychiatrist to help you.

Your broken heart will mend in time, but you will experience bouts of hopelessness, anger, and guilt while on the mend. That is part of the curative process. After a year or so, your heart will be fine with all the pieces in their proper places.

Once you get the call for the job interview, the next thing that you have to do is prepare for it. The more prepared you are, the harder it will be to make mistakes. It is best to prepare yourself emotionally as well as intellectually for an interview. Giving a great interview is not as hard as some may think, but not as easy as others do either. Here are a few things that must be done in order to prepare for your next interview.

Remember, during an interview you are there to sell yourself to your prospective employer. You want to market yourself in the most interesting way possible.

It doesn’t matter how much knowledge or experience you have about the position that you are trying to get in a company if you don’t have a clue who the company is or what they do. It is disastrous to enter into an interview and not be able to tell your interviewer what their company is about. How else are you going to tell them why you feel that you would be a good addition to their company?

A good and less time consuming way to get to know about a company is to look up their website.
You can also look them up in the media files if there are any. Read the articles about them and soak in as much information as possible. Another thing that would be nice to do is to check out the surrounding area around the company. It makes for a nice breaker during the interview. You can make a comment about a particular monument or resting place nearby.

When called for an interview, ask to whom you will be talking to. It is nice to be able to greet your interviewer by name at the beginning of the interview without first being told who they are. It shows that you are on top of things, and have prepared before hand.

You will also want to do some research on the person that will be conducting your interview. Learn what they do for the company and try to get some samples of their work or achievements in the company.

If you know what department that you are going to work in you may want to get the names of your potential colleagues and superiors prior to the interview as well. This way you can get some information about their roles in the company and the types of work that they have done.

Mention some of the things that you learn about your potential colleagues in the interview and about how much you look forward to working with them in the future. If you can, give an example of their work so that you will appear more sincere.

It is best, if you are prone to nervousness, to practice giving your responses to the questions that may be asked of you. You should practice your wording and the tone of voice that you plan to use; Try keeping your responses as brief as possible, but with as much detail as you can.

When you are trying to work out the proper responses to the interviewer’s questions, you will also want to practice the art of getting your nerves under control as well as ridding yourself of any other odd habits while talking; like expressing yourself with your hands.

Practice answering your interview questions with a friend. Get his or her opinion about your delivery and gestures. Perhaps your friend will have some nice insights for you to use during the real interview.

Inspiration Poster

Posted on: June 23rd, 2008

We rely on our minds a lot for just about everything. When we diet, go after a new career, or try to change our lives for the better, we often need a little push. We can’t always give ourselves the motivation that we need when we need it, and sometimes that means we need to have a little push. One thing I have found that works for me is an inspiration poster, though I did not buy mine in a store, I made it myself. No matter how you get one, it will help you along your way.

An inspiration poster can be anything you want it to be. As long as it offers you the boost you need, it works. If you are dieting, you may want something that reminds you of why you are doing it. What that is will be up to you. If you are jumping into a new career, you may want something that reminds you of what you have to gain and what you are working towards. An inspiration poster is meant to inspire that spark inside of you that sometimes gets over shadowed by the stresses of life. We can’t always be at our best, and sometimes we need a reminder.

You may find that the best inspiration poster is the one you make yourself. You can get a large sheet of poster board and make it in an hour or so. You need to have a stack of magazines, scissors, and glue. All you have to do is go through the magazines and find scenes or times that will help you remember where you are going and what you want. To finish your inspiration poster you should glue a collage of these photos to the poster board and allow to dry. You can even frame it if you want to.

Hang your inspiration poster wherever you think you need it to be. If you are dieting, you may want to hang it in your kitchen where you can easily see it. If you are doing something career related, you may want to hang your inspiration poster near your computer or some place where you will see it on your way out the door in the morning and when you come home at night. You may find that a glance at this poster is all you need some days to square your shoulders and soldier on.

Psychic Esp Powers

Posted on: June 22nd, 2008

My grandfather, a cynical but well read and well traveled old man, used to have a saying that he’d use all the time. He used to always say, “they’ll get you when you’re coming or they’ll get you when you’re going.” although I think he applied this belief a little too broadly, nonetheless it is essentially true. Nowhere is it more true than in the world of mysticism. Either they’ll rip you off by claiming that they have psychic abilitiess, or by convincing you that you can learn to have them yourself.

If you’ve ever seen online psychics, you know exactly what I’m talking about. There are literally thousands of these sites, claiming that they can heal you and lead you to success in love, business, and your personal life, all for only $.99 a minute. Apparently, there are many people out there who are credulous enough to believe that these people actually have psychic abilities. All I know is that if I had psychic abilities, I would not be working for $.99 a minute over the Internet.

And from there, it gets even more ridiculous. There are people who claim that they can actually teach you how to get psychic ESP powers. They claim that you can develop supernatural abilities from the comfort of your own home, provided that you buy their book. Of course, they provide no documentation to prove their claims, and so you just have to take it on faith. I have a cousin who used to read this stuff all the time. He claimed he had psychic abilities, and when I asked him to prove it to me, he accepted the challenge. He tried to read what I was thinking about, failed eight times, and then said that I just wasn’t “ready to see it” as if it were my fault that he was a fraud.

The shocking thing about many of the people who believe in psychic abilities, is that a lot of them are otherwise pretty sensible people. In most ways, my cousin is one of the most rational folks that I know, but when it turns to matters of the occult, he becomes a flake. I guess that it is important for him to believe in psychic powers. Maybe believing that he has psychic abilities gives his life some meaning and make him feel special. All I know is that it makes him look ridiculous, and that is a shame.

Social Skills Lessons

Posted on: June 22nd, 2008

When I started college I was not sure what I wanted to major in for my career. I had enjoyed accounting in high school; however I thought that a career working with numbers might be dull. During my sophomore year of college my father had a heart attack and was hospitalized with open heart surgery. He had several complications and needed to be in the hospital for several weeks. My sisters all had children that they were taking care of so it was decided that I would be the one to stay with my mom at the hospital with dad. The hospital that he was staying in was seventy five miles from their home.

Being with my mom in the hospital was my first exposure to social workers. My dad had to be moved to a rehabilitation unit once he was stabilized and the social worker met with mom and me to make these arrangements. Once dad was better I met with the dean of the social work program and decided that this would be my field of study. During one of my field experience classes I volunteered at the boys and girls club. One of my duties was to teach social skills lessons to the kids that were in the after school club. These kids needed a place to stay while their parents were working. Many of them came from single parent families and they had not been taught social skills lessons at home.

When I was first asked to do this I found it quite intimidating. I was only nineteen years old and I did not have any education classes. I looked at the curriculum that they had on the subject. To my surprise the social skills lessons that they wanted me to teach were basic manners. My mother is a real stickler on manners and social graces, so I thought this would be something that I would be able to teach. I asked if I could bring in props for the lessons. I was told that I could do what ever I wanted as long as the children kept the noise level down and that they stayed in the assigned area. The social skills lessons were to be taught over a six week period of time two days each week.

The first week I had them practice shaking hands with each other and greeting each other. The next week I brought in peanut butter and crackers and had them practice table manners. The kids and I had a great deal of fun during the six week course. Teaching social skills lessons is something that I have done throughout my career as a social worker.
