Ways To Find The Value Of Collectible Coins
Posted on: September 18th, 2008In coin collecting, the condition of a coin is everything and is the key to determining its value. A coin in mint or uncirculated condition can be worth several hundred or even a thousand times more than a coin that is in extremely poor condition. In fact, some extremely rare coins can be considered priceless and have nothing to compare to. That example seems kind of obvious is is true of almost every type of collectible such as stamps, cars, baseball cards and more. Almost all collectors create systems to determine the the condition and value of a collectible.
The most common one used for coins is the one adopted by the American Numismatic Association called the Sheldon system and numbers a coin between 1 and 70, where 70 represents a perfect specimen and 1 represents a barely identifiable coin.
The generally accepted scale of for how to grade coins from highest to lowest work something like this:
* Mint State (MS) 60–70: Uncirculated
* About/Almost Uncirculated (AU) 50, 53, 55, 58
* Extremely Fine (XF or EF) 40, 4-
* Very Fine (VF) 20, 25, 30, 35
* Fine (F) 12, 15
* Very Good (VG) 8, 10
* Good (G) 4, 6
* About Good (AG) 3
* Fair (FA, FR) 2
* Poor (PR, PO) 1
As most hobbies go, collectors of coins often have a theme around which they collect. A few popular themes include:
Country collections
Collectors may find coins from every country that ever minted a coin, or they may aim to collect every coin every minted by a particular country.
Year collections
Rather than collecting one type of coin, some collectors attempt to collect every type of coin minted by year. For example, a collector might collect one Lincoln cent for every year from 1909 to the present. This is one of the most common ways to collect US currency. In fact most bookstores or coin collecting stores sell specially designed books, or coin albums, for the purpose of collecting coins by year.
Mintmark collections
A mint mark determines where a coin was minted. US currency is minted in such places as Denver, San Francisco. When you look at a Lincoln penny, for instance, near its date, is a small letter that determines where it was minted. The letter D denotes Denver. The letter S is for San Francisco. When collecting by year and mint mark, it isn’t enough to collect one coin for each year, but for each year collect every coin minted.
Home Theater Practicalities
Posted on: September 17th, 2008Today’s shoppers are much more savvy than they have been in days past. Perhaps this sophistication when it comes to learning about the products we spend our hard earned money on is the result of instant information at our fingertips through the Internet or a deep desire to know more about where our money is going. Whatever the reason, we are taking the time to learn as much as possible about our investments and carefully planning how we spend our money before it leaves our wallets.
Home Theater Practicalities
In many ways this is wonderful news. You really can’t go wrong as a consumer my educating yourself about the products you are considering purchasing and this holds doubly true when it comes to electronics. More and more consumers are opening up to the idea of home theaters. In fact, this is becoming a selling point in many homes across the country. It is a great idea to research the products you will purchase and the individual components of your home theater system but how much time have you invested towards the planning and design of your home theater?
You may have the room in mind, but do you have the wiring you need? Are outlets in the correct location in order to provide the extra outlets you will need for your components? Do you have the wiring for speakers in place or is this something additional you will need to consider? Will you go with wireless speakers in order to avoid the hassle? There are so many questions you will need to ask yourself when planning for your home theater.
Home Theater
What, of your existing home entertainment equipment will you be keeping and which pieces of equipment, if any, will you be replacing? I always recommend buying one component at a time and building a home theater system rather than simply going in and purchasing a box off the shelf that has everything in one place. While you can get a very nice system by doing this, I think you will ultimately get more bang for your buck if you build your own system one piece at a time and select each piece for the individual qualities your prefer. That being said, once you get the components home you need to be able to install them and incorporate them into your existing home theater.
Will you be adding special home theater seating or going with a big comfy couch? This matters when planning the layout for the room in which you will be watching your movies and television favorites. You want the seating to be comfortable or no one will want to spend too terribly much time in the room, no matter how large the television screen is. We like to be comfortable as we watch 24 hours of non-stop action or the nearest planet in a far off solar system explode. Do you have a plan for providing that comfort in your home theater? Gaming Trends: Looking Back Through The History
Posted on: September 15th, 2008With as far as games have come along through history, it’s tough to say where we could possibly go next. I mean really, we have witnessed the evolution of the board game into the computer game, then the computer game to the arcade game as well as the television requiring console (we’ll call it the early console- like Atari), then, from the early console evolved the high graphic output consoles and portables of today. The latest console phenomenon, the Wii, has even taken the gaming experience a bit further to add the first “virtual” aspect to gaming in the form of a 3 dimensional sensing remote!
So, where does gaming go next? Will it ever go completely virtual? I guess only time will tell but it appears that just about anything is a reality and the gaming industry continues to push the envelope to give gamers the most realistic experience possible.
Here is a breakdown of the history behind the gaming trends:
1947- The Cathode-Ray Tube was developed and patented by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr and Estle Ray Mann. It was used to simulate missile firing patterns at a target and had knobs to adjust curve and speed of the path
1952- “OXO”, an early version of Tic-Tac-Toe was created by A.S. Douglas as a demonstration of human-computer interaction.
1958- William Higinbotham created a game called “Tennis for Two” on his analog computer and amused visitors to the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York
1960s- People started creating their own games from university mainframe computers as a hobby since access to computers was still scarce. Games like “Spacewar!”, “Chase”, and “Space Travel” were created.
1970s- The Golden Age of Gaming. Computer game development took several different directions- arcade machines, handhelds and personal computers. Galaxy Game became the first coin operated arcade game and Atari was released.
1908s- Publishing Houses appeared and games in various genres emerged. Pseudo-3D graphics began to be used. This was the era that Pac-Man, Zork and the Legend of Zelda were released. It was also the beginning of online internet gaming, handheld LCD games and the first Nintendo Console.
1990s- This period was all about maturing what was already developed. It was about perfection. It was also the time period that the Sims series emerged. Arcade games declined and handhelds started to take the shape they are in today. MMORPGs took shape and Playstation emerged.
And that takes us to today… Xbox, Playstation, Wii- systems with extreme graphic abilities and tons of realism. I don’t know how it could possibly get much better….
Russian Dolls At The Beijing Olympics
Posted on: September 15th, 2008Russian Nesting Dolls, also known as nesting dolls, are the most popular and best known of all Russian souvenirs. The russian dolls were first created in the late 19th century in Russia by Sergei Maliutin who was inspired by Japanese design. In the Russian language the word for wooden dolls is matryoshka. A set of nesting dolls has become very popular to everyone of all ages. They have become very trendy and best known Russian toy that will become a great collectible item for many years. Nesting dolls are small wooden figures that have a similar egg shape. The dolls design when pulled apart will have a smaller but similar design inside. There will usually be five or more dolls inside, all being smaller than the last. There are several different themes and interests to choose from. It can be anything from polical figures to current themes.
As 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Games came to a close. I was watching the beauty of the opening and closing ceremony, I began to think about how it would be nice to see the thousands of the host country volunteers be remembered as nesting dolls. The Summer Olympic’s ceremony will be remembered as one of the biggest and best ever. It would be hard to single out only a few of the performers to create the nesting dolls, but the performers I will remember would make a great nesting doll set. The largest doll would be the dancers for all the beauty and grace. The next should be the drummers for all of their rythmic flair and ability. Another one should represent all of the acrobats who created an illusion of flying thru the air.
If you were going to make a set of nesting dolls for a team sport you can look no further than the highly anticipated men’s basketball redeem team being great representatives of the games. It would be easy to make the centers and power forwards the larger nesting dolls and the point and shooting guards as the smaller dolls. The only problem with a tall team is which players would be the smaller dolls.
The major highlight that everyone will be talking about for years would have to be 8 time gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps won the most gold medals at a single Olympics. He also won with class and style. A different nesting doll could represent each of the different gold medal races, each showing the events and times on the back of doll. Another idea could the different designs of the swim suits that he and the swim team wore.
The last group that I would like to see as dolls nesting would be the announcers of the Olympic Games. Good choices would be play by play host like swimming Dan Hicks or track and field host Tom Hammond would make great dolls. Another group would be the studio hosts Cris Collinsworth, Jim Lamply, or Mary Carillo. We would want to remember to make the main studio host Bob Costas the smallest of the nesting dolls. Being the shortest anchor he would very easy making him the tiniest doll.
Photography Schooling Institutions - Teaching Preferences For The Maturing Photographer
Posted on: September 13th, 2008Many schools and colleges offer photography training to students as an elective subject. However, there is no requirement to gain admission to an educational institution for a degree if you have studied photography for several years on your own or even taken some helpful classes on a non-formal basis.
Certainly you can learn the skills of a photographer even if you have not taken photography classes in school. But excellence in this field does require dedication, and more formal class training can be a great help.
Remote Training
Some institutions offer “long distance education.” You can enroll in such institutions and - unlike typical college majors - do not need to reside on campus or sit in a classroom environment to learn photography. An example of such institution is New York Institute of Photography.
If you become part of a school like this, you will learn everything from camera equipment to a variety of photographic techniques. You can even study photography during journalism classes. While developing your skills, you also receive magazines and articles related to digital imaging, contests, and a number of other photography-related knowledge and events.
The photography program at the New York Institute is built around 30 lectures on wide array of topics. Initially you are given a brief introduction to the material to allow you to choose your specialized field of interest.
Benefits of Long Distance Training
A significant advantage of non-campus training is that you can perform your regular job and learn photography simultaneously. And there is no time limit for learning photography; whenever you are free, you can learn and practice.
During the training, you will not only sit under the tutelage of a professor, but will also be provided sample pictures allowing you to study great photography to compare and apply your knowledge on a practical level.
There are No Limits
A common belief among those interested in this field is that to become a photographer, you must have your own dark room to develop photos. You will be happy to know that this isn’t the case anymore. Some of the most well known photographers in this business don’t do their own development anymore, paying others instead to do so for them. This affords more time to focus on learning to take great shots.
Another great benefit of photography training is that there is no age limit. Knowledge is a path open to anyone of any age who possesses sufficient interest and motivation. And the rewards you gain from learning photography are incalculable. You have the opportunity to earn good pay through professional photography or simply engage in this activity as a hobby or “labor of love.”
Photography educational institutions not only provide students an environment in which to learn, but also assign specific camera work activities to help their students assess just how much they have gained from the training. And it is all quite fun once you get started!
Is Gaming A Waste Of Time?
Posted on: September 12th, 2008Is gaming a waste of time?
This is a questions that is asked time and time again. Non-gamers fail to see the value in video gaming and gamers[/spin} argue the point that they truly do serve a valuable purpose.
So, who’s right? What can one learn from teachers say that having a healthy imagination is important to development, so something has to be said for gaming.
Gaming encourages problem solvingskills. Yet another educational benefit. All video games have some sort of puzzle-like component that you have to figure out in order to progress through the levels.
Gaming can help teach important life lessons- like right from wrong. I know that more talk is given to the subject of video gaming fostering negative behavior and anger, but it can also be argued that by experiencing or engaging in games that have morally “wrong” elements to them a child learns that it’s wrong. (As a side note however, it might be helpful if a parent is also around to talk about and help the child formulate the right moral opinion)
Gaming can stave off serious illness. (Yes, I expect some head scratching over that comment, but it’s true!) There are links to how, and how much, we use certain parts of our brains that are linked to development or prevention of illnesses like Alzheimer’s.
There are certainly other benefits that could be offered up, but I think the above is enough to validate the point that gaming DOES serve an important purpose.
Get Information About Creating Candles
Posted on: September 12th, 2008Candle Making is a great hobby. It’s fun, and fairly easy to learn. Supplies are not super-expensive, and are easily available. The best thing is that the variety you can create is infinite. There is no limit to what your imagination, and different candle making techniques, can do.
There are a variety of different supplies and ingredients you can choose from. There is your traditional candle wax, made of paraffin usually, which you can do so many things with. If you want to get away from that, consider making soy candles or gel candles, all of which have their own unique characteristics.
With colors, scents, shapes, sizes, number and kind of wicks, containers, and more, you can learn how to make any kind of candle you can dream of.
Candles make a great gift, and can be sold at excellent profit margins. That is because the perceived value of a candle far exceeds the cost of making one.
The real cost is in some initial supplies, then in ongoing replenishment to supplies. When I started, I bought about $300 worth of stuff: double boiler, multiple molds, some small tins, wicks, big blocks of three different waxes, scents, colors, some tools for holding wicks, thermometer, chemicals to make the wax do cool stuff, uh, I don’t remember what else.
With what I have, I can make probably 40 or 50 candles. Not a lot of huge ones, but some. Really, it’s so much fun creating new candles and learning new techniques.
Rc Model Aircraft - Tips On Large Rc Planes
Posted on: September 11th, 2008RC model planes is a hobby that no limits and knows no bounds, constrained only by the very limits of the hobbyists imagination, due to its wide and wonderful array of prices, models and technology. Whatever your budget, whatever your preference, there is bound to be a RC model plane just perfect for you. Most beginners tend to go for the less challenging models; such models are generically referred to as the park flyers and are well suited for novices due to their predictable, stable and docile nature.
Apart from a tendency to veer off in windy conditions, park flyers are a perfect and very useful training tool to develop a better understanding of the skill and commitment required. More tips can be found at rc model planes hobby to help you learn more about this hobby.
That said, a false and very misleading preconception people have is that large rc planes are by their very nature (i.e. by virtue of their large size) more cumbersome and awkward to control as well as handle.
As a matter of fact, because of this increased size and density, the large rc plane models tend to be easier to operate, less likely to succumb to the perils of full force gale winds, and less prone to accidents. Some of the smaller models make use of anti crash technology to prevent the models from crashing and thus sustaining damage, the larger models tend to have such defences already present thanks to their bulk.Large rc planes are also very easy to assemble, whilst historically they required copious amounts of time, and no small amount of precision as well as patience so as to avoid making a crucial error, the grunt work has been largely eliminated now because these models come ready made and assembled, just waiting to be flown.
Most models come fully equipped with wings, body and a fully operative fuselage, requiring only a radio and some batteries, even more helpful is there design in which spaces are clearly set out and aside for the various additional elements that require to be added to the plane. What this means in real terms is that even the most technically challenged novice will be able to clearly identify (albeit it by means of a process of elimination) which component fits where, very much akin to a jigsaw.
When it comes to large rc planes, to use them effectively really requires little more than confidence so don’t be shy!
