It can be very frustrating when kids seem to disregard a parent when they are asked to do a task, or given some child discipline for bad behavior. Many parents find that children tune them out when they give them instructions. In fact, it is easy for parents to take this personally. The problem is not necessarily disobedience or bad child behaviour, even though it appears that way. This article explores this problem and gives some parenting strategies that will increase your kid’s ability to hear you and understand.
One of the problems is different communication styles and abilities. Children have a very small attention span and parents have a tendency to talk too much and to lecture you. Put these two facts together and you can appreciate why children do not listen.

Firstly it is important to get down to the level of the child. It’s a lot harder to ignore somebody who is right in your face. If you have something important to communicate is necessary to get down to the level of the child This might mean that you need to bend down or alternatively pick them up.

Change the way you talk to your child. Most parents used to many words and the child loses focus Decide what you want to say ahead of time and then say it in simple words. After giving the instructions just keep quiet.

Asked the child to repeat to you the instruction tell me what I said to you in after the child has repeated it just carry on what you were doing and let the child do what you ask them to do.

It is important for this interaction that you keep calm and clear. There is no need to threaten or yell, talk to them in a clear, calm voice.

Think about the way you generally communicate with the child. You certainly don’t go to these extreme lengths when you say good morning or are you hungry. Remember that is important to have communication that is also fun. Don’t have every communication with your child that is action focused or serious. Keep this kind of interaction for when it really matters or when you know that they’re not paying attention.

Self-Esteem and Fitting In
One of these issues is self-esteem and fitting in. During this period, children become excessively worried about their perceived acceptance level. They continuously seek reassurance from others about their value to them and they always feel an urge to reassure themselves about how much they are loved by others. As a parent you must know how to encourage them to realize about those aspects they are particularly good at. You must know how to respect his or her privacy with peers while being cautious about your teen’s lifestyle too.

It’s could for a parent and a teenager to have a shared interest. Why not learn face painting. Think of the great face paintimg designs you could create for Halloween and other celebrations

Clothing Preference
Another important issue may involve appearance and clothing preferences. Sexual maturity may play an influential role in clothing preference. When you are seeking teenage parenting information, it can be assumed that you are really worried about the development of your teenage child. So, always remember this is a crucial phase which you must not avoid, particularly when you find your child is wearing something seductive and mostly prefer late night outings. You must talk to your child and let her understand about the potential danger about this type of lifestyle.

Reinforce Consistent Discipline
Disciplines bring responsibility. Even if you are free with your child, you must not be afraid when you reinforce discipline as a parent. But remember one thing that discipline must come in a consistent fashion. To be a successful teenage parent, you must make it sure that the basic requirements are met. You may take suggestions from other parents and read different publications focusing on teenage parenting information for help establishing disciplines like must check in before dinner time, no car dating until the child becomes 16, etc.

Award and Punishment
It is the worst idea if you do any physical harm to your child if he or she breaks any rule set by you. In addition, emotional humiliation is not also a good choice. Rather it is better to notice what your teen likes. Pick it to make the punishment. For instance, if he or she likes to spend time playing games on Xbox, simply forbid its use during the punishment phase. Grounding can also be good option that really works.

Like punishment, you should also provide award to your teens. However, it is not a good idea to buy a car for your teen. Instead you may take your teen for a lovely dinner or buy a handheld gadget such as cell phone or music devices. You may also look over the internet and other teen publications specializing in teenage parenting guidance for help exploring different new suggestions on teen awards and punishments.

The history of top Christmas toys is a long and storied one. That’s neither here nor there. Popularity of toys certainly has nothing to do with Christmas alignment. Many of the toys from the past have been quite expensive. Few toys have done better than these. You can’t argue that these are the top Christmas toys of this year and years past.

Created in Southern California, Bratz dolls are immensely popular and are top Christmas toys. The facial features of the dolls are incredibly distinct. Apparently, the Bratz film will be coming into theaters shortly. The creator of Bratz lost $100 million in a lawsuit to Mattel. Even though kids love Bratz, there’s no substitute for Barbies. Barbie dolls have taken a significant hit since the creation of Bratz. Bratz dolls appeal more to the lifestyles, behavior patterns, and fashion and dress style patterns of children than Barbie dolls do. Barbie’s golden years may be behind it. Bratz makes the majority of its sales around Christmastime. There’s no doubt that the Bratz dolls are a bit rougher around the edges than Barbies are. However, Barbies are still quite popular - Barbie & The Diamond Castle Princess Liana Doll is a toy everyone is talking about this season.

There’s no doubt that Barbies will always be top Christmas toys. Ruth Handler created Barbie dolls, and they were marketed and mass-manufactured in 1959 by Mattel, Inc. After the inception, the dolls became enormously popular. Barbie has branched out into every realm imaginable. Barbie dolls are meant to show that women can take on any role in the workplace like being an airline pilot, flight attendant, doctor, nurse, or even a fully-fledged Nascar race car driver. Barbie is so named because the inventor’s daughter’s name was Barbara. Handler also gave her daughter the first doll ever made. How awesome for her!

There’s no doubt that GI Joe must be placed in the ranks of the top Christmas toys for boys that has ever existed. There are four types of G.I. Joes – one for the air force, navy, army, and marines. The phrase action figure actually was created to refer to GI Joes. Before the design was modified, GI Joes stood at towering foot tall. Over time, the vehicles and accessories were added. The older model being phased out, GI Joe came into the form in which we know it now. As kids would get tired with just one permutation, there have been many as time has gone on. It would be hard to deny that the Joes are some of the top Christmas toys. G.I. Joe originally launched with a World War II theme.

The list of top Christmas toys is definitely a stellar one.

Young children can be fussy eaters who refuse to try a new food at least half of the time. Around half of all toddlers fit this description, so it is no surprise that food issues are a major source of parenting stress.

Establishing healthy eating patterns is important to avoid health issues such as obesity and eating disorders later in life. Various strategies can assist your daughter or son accept a wider range of foods. It may be necessary to offer a food to your daughter or son as many as 10 different times before they decide to eat it. The problem is, many parents get frustrated and give up before the fourth or fifth attempt.

Try to make foods fun. Colorful foods such as carrot sticks, apples, raisins, grapes, cheese sticks and crackers can all be fun and healthy choices for your growing toddler. Explain to them that eating good food is important so they’ll grow big and strong, and how it will assist them to run faster and play longer.

Children learn behaviors from their parents. If you restrict yourself to a narrow range of foods, your toddler will take notice and mimic your actions. Don’t restrict your toddler’s food variety to only those foods you prefer. It may be that your toddler’s tastes are different to yours, and perhaps you are simply serving them foods they don’t happen to like. Try to set a good example and try a variety of foods in front of your toddler. It might motivate them to do the same.

If your toddler seems healthy and energetic, then they are eating enough. If you are still concerned, keep an eye on how much food they actually consume over the day. Children tend to graze constantly, rather than restrict their eating to three meals per day like adults. You may be surprised how those little handfuls and snacks add up. For further reassurance, check your toddler’s growth and weight charts, or check with your child’s pediatrician.
Try not to worry, and don’t forget, that unless a child is umwell, they will eat. Children are surprisingly good at judging their hunger and fullness signals. Try to stay relaxed about mealtime and offer your toddler a wide variety of foods, and most importantly, don’t forget to set a good example by trying a wide variety of foods yourself. You may discover you and your child share a new found favorite food!

Whenever it comes to balancing a family, including young kids, a home and perhaps a full time job to boot, you have choices. If you find that your workload sometimes seems like it is just too much, take heart!

From an outside perspective, I would say that the key to success in organizing is the ability to prioritize your various commitments, enlist the help of others, and not sweat the small stuff.

Do you feel overwhelmed? If you want good time management skills, practice the COPE method.

COPE is an acronym for Capitalize, Organize, Prioritize, and Energize.

* Capitalize on the ability of every child to help with household chores such as setting the table, clearing the dishes and vacuuming the floor. Teach them very early to put away their toys and make their own beds. Put all of your perfectionist tendencies aside while the children are growing up. Do more with your kids and less for your kids. If you do all of this, you will be blessed.

* Organize your home to make it easier to find and store things. Large shelves or a huge toy chest and hangers placed where kids can reach them are good examples. Keep things in see-through containers, hang an essential rack on the wall, keep storage bins on casters beneath the beds and then centrally locate a lost and found basket to stash items left lying around the house.

* Prioritize each of your tasks. You cannot do everything but you can do lots. Pick the most important activity and then concentrate on getting it done. If something falls through the cracks, let it be the laundry but not the family outing. Do what is really important, not simply the things that need to be done.

* Energize yourself by getting plenty of rest, eat all of the right foods and adhere to an exercise program. Being physically fit and mentally alert will allow you to cope with those stressful situations, which always pop up. Choose a form of exercise that you enjoy that way you are more likely to stick with it. The best way to make sure that you eat a balanced diet is to plan ahead and work out a menu for the next 4 or 5 days. Make sure you eat lots of fruit and vegetables. And incorporate some relaxtaion techniques into your daily life. Do not do chores at the expense of sleep time. Let the house collapse all around you before you do.

Are Baby Front Carriers Any Good?

Posted on: November 15th, 2008

If I was told I could only have one piece of infant equipment, without hesitation, I would choose a baby sling. I did not own a sling for my first three of my seven children. I had no knowledge of them outside of maybe seeing images of women in third world countries using them to strap their babies to them. Something significant happened during the seven years between the births of my third and fourth daughter: the rise in popularity of the internet. With the internet came the simple exchange of ideas.

Other hands free ways to hold your baby are Baby Front Carrier and baby backpacks. Greco and Baby Bjorn are two of the more popular brands of front carriers. With these, two padded shoulder straps go over your shoulders and criss-cross your back. The straps adjust to accommodate different sizes and shapes. The baby is then slipped into a supportive pocket with leg holes that leave the feet dangling. As the baby grows and gets bigger, many carriers allow the baby to face outward. Personally speaking, the baby front carrier seemed awkward to me. If the baby fell asleep while in the carrier, it was difficult to gently remove her to lay her down in the crib. Also, having the baby in front was both physically and visually impairing, making the accomplishments of such tasks as sewing, meal preparation, cleaning, caring for older children, et cetera more challenging.

Baby backpacks have metal or plastic tube frames to stand the frame up in order to insert the child. Then the frame is elevated and slipped onto the back of the adult. I discovered that the baby got heavy quickly with this method. Also, I didn’t like the fact that I had no visual contact with the baby while she was on my back. I also couldn’t just sit down and take a rest without having to first remove the backpack. I personally didn’t like the functionality of the backpack for times when the baby fell asleep. Additionally, it was rather large and took up quite a bit of space when it was not in use.

Nine years ago, after the birth of my fourth daughter, I was finally introduced to … cue up the Halleluah chorus … A BABY SLING!!! There are several kinds; my chosen sling style was a long piece of fabric that fed through two metal fastening rings, leaving a “tail” of fabric. The absolute favorite was the Maya Wrap with a pocket sewn into the tail, which I used to carry a couple extra diapers and wipes, and often my car keys and notecase! With the baby sling, I could carry the baby high or low, on the front, side, or back, facing forward or facing me, and lying down or sitting up. I was also able to breast feed in a tactful, usually hands free manner, covering any accidental exposure with the tailpiece of the sling, which easily went over my shoulder. As the infant grew, the sling easily adjusted to accommodate her changing comfort preferences. Up until my children were about four or five years old, I was able to continuously use my sling for hands free carrying. As a child care center owner, there were many times where I was able to put two children comfortably in one sling allowing me to still use my hands for other things. I often used the sling to hold and bottle-feed infant twins.

As you can see, I am a bit biased toward slings, but the other hands free baby carriers might be absolutely ideal for your needs. Look at all options and try a few out. Whichever you choose, you will be a happier, more productive new parent as you learn to incorporate the joy of nurturing your newborn with the other long list of tasks that you have.

Fleurville Honored with Green Business Award

Posted on: November 14th, 2008

While almost all designers look to make a diaper bag moisture repellent, UV resistant, and durable, Fleurville has done this in a way that is not detrimental to our environment. Fleurville believes in using materials that will have less of an impact on the environment, so instead of using PVC, like all other major labels, they use their very own signature Green Lam, a polyurethane laminate. Asides from environmental responsibility, designing bags that work for and focus on the parent is also in Fleurville’s philosophy. Just because we become parents, it does not mean that our lives are solely dedicated to someone other than ourselves. We still have the right to go out and live, and it was to this end that Fleurville bags were designed.

Families and Moving

Posted on: November 14th, 2008

About 15% of the American population moves each year according to the US census bureau. There are many different reasons for these moves. Reasons might include things such as new jobs, medical reasons, or weather related things such as hurricanes. Planning a move in advance will help you make sure that your move is a incomplex and easy one. Stress builds up fast, but organizing can relieve some of this. You will find a nearly endless number of options open to you when you move, so you will have to do a little bit of research before you can settle on a final decision. Finding things like truck rentals is overly simple and you can reserve one by providing a little bit of personal information.

One of the very first choices that you need to make is which method of moving that you want to use. You can choose from a full-service company that will take care of all the aspects of your move, or one of the many self pack moving companies that are out there today. While a full service company will pack, load, and drive in a very professional and capable manner, it may not always be the right option for your situation or move. The biggest downfall to this method is the fact that it is quite costly. In order to cut costs, you can pack and load yourself using the self pack method instead. When you choose to move with this method, you will pack and load a container, but the company will drive it to its destination. This method is a great mix of full service moving companies and the truck rental options.

Moving pods and portable storage are good options for people who are moving across state lines and who want to have some control of their move. It is also a lot cheaper to take this route than it would be to hire a full service company. All that you need to do when you take this route is book the service. They will drop a container or trailer off at your home and you will be tasked will filling it up. Once it is packed, the company will come and drive the container to your new home. Once there, you will need to unload it. You will have some control of your move, but you will not have to worry about driving a long distance.

If you want more time and flexibility, however, you can always obtain a truck rental. Renting a truck will enable you to build your moving schedule around the needs that you already have planned. Using this method will enable you and your family to really save on moving costs. You need to remember, however, that it is up to you to pack everything that you own as well as loading it up in the truck and driving it to your new place.

The internet has really made it facile to get information about things like a moving van rental. You can now get moving quotes from various different companies as well as information about various aspects of moving all online. Some companies even offer discounts if you book your move online. These discounts can really help you save when you move.

My Kids Play Too Many Video Games

Posted on: November 11th, 2008

All my kids talk about getting every year for Christmas is video games if they don’t go downstairs and find Gears of War 2 under our new prelit flocked christmas tree I do not know how they will survive. It makes me a little nuts since I do all I can to get my kids outdoors. I would much rather give them a pair of new skates or golf clubs then some mind numbing thing that will enchant them in front of the television. Oh well I guess you just learn that kids are kids. Arguing with the boys over “appropriate” lengths of time is just too much work.

After saying that I guess I should get to the point that I’ve developed a few ways to control their television addiction. I do a couple of things in an effort to force them outside. First off I limit their time every day to one hour (they can earn more). I have discovered that limiting the time is key to everything else because then they know time above and beyond that is to be earned. To be more fair I’ve allowed them some methods of earning more television time. That leads me to talk about trick number two. They can get more television time by either doing chores or spending time outside. The chores is nice for me and generally has a pretty good payoff for them. I intentionally made it with the purpose of them getting around one hour of television time for every one hour they spend on chores.

The second way they earn time, by going outside, is a little less rewarding. When they go outside and play nice I allow them 15 minutes of gaming to every hour of outside time. Like I say this isn’t a huge payoff, but I also don’t really think asking them to be outside is a huge thing to ask. This mostly pays off for them on weekends. They can play outdoors for the day on Saturday and then spend the night playing video games. I do not even mind if they play a night of video games after a good day outside.

That being said I’m ok with one or two ending up under artificial flocked christmas tree this year if it has the effect of getting my brats outside and getting some stuff done around the house for me. They had better like the games they’re getting, because I know I’ll like my “gift” of one more thing to use “against” my boys.
