Seagate 7200.11 0 LBA

Seagate have admitted there is a memory leak problem in the new 7200.11 series of hard disks and have already issued a firmware fix. The problem stems from a memory bug where the cache size is not reported correctly.

If you are lucky enough to have found this out before your disk drive has failed, then get onto the Seagate website and download firmware update (if it is appropriate), or search for ‘Seagate 7200.11 firmware update’ on Google.

According to Seagate, the problem affects the following drives..
500 GB : ST3500320AS
750 GB : ST3750330AS
1000 GB : ST31000340AS

Reports on the Seagate forum indicate that there may be a similar problem with the 1.5 TB version of the drive.

If your hard disk has failed, then you will need a data recovery company, such as MjM Data Recovery Ltd in the UK who, at the time of writing, are one of only a handful of companies in the world that are able to repair the drives in order to recover the data. A link to MjM is provided above.

Other problems that have been reported with 7200.11 drives are..

SGI have a long history of involvement with Hollywood. Having pioneered the special effects industry, SGI’s computers have provided the effects for some of the most successful blockbuster films. Although most recognised for their work in Jurassic Park, SGI have also been said to have developed laptop machines for several other films.

Most famously, Silicon Graphics laptops featured heavily in the movie Twister. These were however mockups, built by the effects team Banned From The Ranch. They use SGI Presenter displays - an early LCD panel - with leads going off screen to Indys, which created the on-screen displays.

A ruggedised laptop computer also featured in Congo, where Laura Linney’s character deployed one deep in the jungle to communicate via satellite with TraviCom HQ. Again, these were effects team mockups, and weren’t real laptops.

The only real SGI laptop ever made was by a company called CRI, who specialise in designing toughened models of laptops for the military. They developed a custom Indy laptop called the LinC3D 75-FS. These rugged computers weren’t just deployed on the battlefield - they were also deployed by the US Navy, and one was [spi]alleged|rumoured[/spin] to have been flown up to the ISS. Although made for the defence industry, maybe one day some of these unique laptops will appear on the open market.

Sun Microsystems and SGI both began as workstation manufacturers, designing some of the earliest UNIX workstations available. Over the years, both companies have moved into the server market, and now not only produce some of the fastest servers available, but are also heavily involved in High Performance Computing (HPC). How did this occur?

SGI bought Cray, the supercomputer poster child, in 1996. SGI quickly leveraged Cray’s engineering prowess to design and manufacture the Origin 2000, a massively scalable supercomputer. Amongst Cray’s product line was a machine called the Cray Superserver 6400, which ran Sun’s Solaris and was powered by HyperSPARC processors.

Clearly SGI didn’t want to support a rival’s operating system or CPU architecture, so they immediately sold the Superserver team to Sun Microsystems. Sun Microsystems in turn used this new team, which at the time was working on the UltraSPARC based Starfire project, to build the E10000.

Both Sun Microsystems and SGI continued to build on the knowledge gained from Cray, with Sun releasing the SF15k and SF25k servers, aimed at large companies, and SGI designing the Origin 3000 and Altix supercomputers.

Although the Starfire server line from Sun Microsystems was initially aimed to business, Sun Microsystems quickly realised that they could link these powerful machines and so created a product for High Performance Computing (HPC) clients. As clustered solutions began to dominate the high performance computing world Sun Microsystems turned to their entry level server offerings, applying their clustering and scalability expertise from the top end products, and creating a line of HPC solutions.

Faced with shrinking markets SGI took the same decision, developing a range of cheaper servers to complement their existing top end high performance computing products.

With both companies now increasingly focussed on Intel and AMD based solutions, they continue to refine the servers and engineering lessons gained from the Cray purchase by SGI over a decade ago.
