All About Casserole
The casserole is a french word meaning sauce pan. A casserole is basically a big, deep dish that is used in the oven and also as a server dish. Another meaning for the word casserole is food cooked and served in the same dish. Now, this dish was derived from the ancient practice of cooking meat steadily in eathenware containers. There many types of casserole such as hotpot, ragout, carbonade and cassoulet. The difference between stews and casseroles is that casseroling is the process of heating the dish in an oven where the heat circulates around the cooking pot, but stewing is the process of cooking by heating the bottom of the pot or pan. Though the difference, people will still refer to the same dish as casserole, stew or soup.
There are many casserole recipes throughout the history such as tatertot casserole, broccoli casserole, apple casserole, etc. But in the 18th century, the main type of casserole was made of rice which were used as filling. Many countries such as USA, Canada and Europe cooks casserole. They also cooked in other countries around the earth.
Casseroles are commonly created with 2 types of meat and some vegetables. The liquid added to the casserole is usually in the form of alcohol, beer, stock or vegetable juices. During the cooking, other juices are released from the meat and vegetables. You can thicken the sauce by adding pasta, rice or potato and maybe other grains. Casseroles are usually cooked slowly and is usually served as a side dish or main course. When meat is added to the casserole, it is commonly browned before placing it in the casserole.
Preparing casserole is usually and commonly involved with using condensed soup such as cream of mushroom soup. You can also use macaroni and cheese to prepare casserole.
