How To Take Care Of My Dog If He Is Bleeding

First Aid – Managing a Bleeding Wound

It is very common for puppies to wind up in troublesome situations where they get hurt from their adventures. Like small children, puppies see everything as a possibility for fun, even dangerous situations which adult dogs may have the wisdom to ignore.

Puppies can be injured from electric shock when chewing on wiring, they can suffer head trauma from items falling on them when they reach up to play with it, and they can suffer deep cuts and scrapes when messing around with sharp objects.

Stopping bleeding swiftly is an important task for any pet owner because bleeding can lead to infections among many other things. In order to stop the bleeding though, it is important to understand the three types of bleeds that your puppy may suffer from so that you are able to resolve the situation rather quickly.

1) To start with you have a normal cut or scrape which can result from everyday puppy play. These types of bleeds usually go unnoticed by the puppy and are similar to that of a small scratch you would suffer from. It is important to remember that while these types of cuts are nothing to worry about, if you do not make sure to clean the area with hydrogen peroxide twice a day until it heals, your puppy could get an infection and that is something to worry about.

2) A continuous flow of blood is a type that should cause alarm. These injuries are caused by the damage to small capillaries just under the skin which results in a steady stream of blood. These types of bleeds are similar to that of a nose bleed or a shaving cut. They are hard to stop, but they do stop once enough continuous pressure is applied to it. Keep the injury elevated above the dog’s heart and seek medical attention if you cannot stop the bleeding within 15 to 20 minutes.

3) The most alarming type of bleeding wound is that which is known as a gusher. In this type of injury a main artery is cut or damaged resulting in a consistent spurting of the blood out of the wound. This is a various serious type of injury and you must seek medical attention as soon as possible or your puppy may die from it.
