I Love Bracelona

If you’re looking for excitement, then Barcelona’s the place to be; culture, art, beaches, history and amazing nightlife all rolls into one. If you’re looking for a night out that’s truly Spanish while avoiding all bull fighting, flamenco dancing, castanet clicking kind of places, then Espit Chupitos is the place to go.

Slightly hidden away from the main tourist areas, Espit Chupitos is mainly hogged by well informed Erasmus students, locals and a few tourists. Nevertheless, the bar is always packed to the brim with people often being turned away after a certain hour for the bar being too full. In its prime on Saturday nights, it’s advisable to arrive before 12pm to make sure you get in, and more importantly, to make sure you get a place at the bar.

But what makes this bar so special I hear you ask? Well, where to begin? The bar is quite tiny and there’s only room for around 20 people to sit down (and that’s being optimistic) and neither is there much room to stand up; this makes it a bit of a battle to get to the bar, but once you do get there you’ll stay there all night. Espit Chupitos is a shots bar that specialises in hundreds of different shots; there’s a blackboard covering most of the wall, with the names of the ridiculous number of shots you can get. None of these names however have any description, so the only way to find out what you like (and very probably what you don’t like) is to pick a name and try it.

The shots cover all tastes and types and believe me, you need to go prepared to get quite drunk, quite shocked and if you’re not careful, burnt eyebrows. You can get the normal shots like tequila and sambucca, though even these have a twist; a sambucca shot usually includes your thumb being dunked in the shot then set alight for you to suck it, followed by the shot. The bar often gets set alight with shots like ‘Harry Potter’ and various other pyrotechnic mad creations. If you’re looking for something a little calmer, then I advise ordering the shot that has cream on top (to be downed with no hands) or the ‘crème de la crème’, which is just like drinking a mini, alcoholic milkshake.

If you’re slightly scared by this mad bar, there’s no need as you can order a normal beer or dare I say it, a coke. Either way, the bar is worth a visit if only to see the pyrotechnic displays (the bar gets set alight every 5 minutes or so). The usual thing to do is to get to the bar, order your shot and stay where you are until you’re ready for the next one; if you move, it’s highly probable you won’t make it to the bar again for the crowds of people.

Make sure to book your accommodation Barcelona well in advance as apartment Barcelona get booked up quickly and hotels Barcelona are expensive.
