What Is Leukemia Helpful Tips

Any disease is a problem; it is a problem for those who are sick and from those who love the person who is suffering.

But no matter how tough it is - one of the things about any disease is to know your enemy. The knowledge will not cure as a blessing, but this knowledge will help you to work around the issue with maximum effect.

One more important thing - leukemia today is not a death sentence by default, like it used to be. We tell that not to give a false hope or over-encourage anybody, but this is not a death sentence.

So, what is leukemia?

Leukemia is cancer which starts in the blood-forming tissue of the body. The bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells (the leukemia cells). At the very beginning, they behave almost normally, but sooner or later (this depends upon the type of the leukemia) these cells outnumber the rest of the cells and - to put it simple - the blood can’t do its job.

Leukemia has 4 basic types: chronic lymphocytic leukemia (almost never affects children), chronic myeloid leukemia (adults are most often diagnosed with this type of the leukemia), acute lymphocytic leukemia (common type of leukemia in young children, but can affect adults as well), acute myeloid leukemia (both adults and children at about the same rate).

Leukemia signs and symptoms.

Basically the researches show that the initial signs and symptoms of leukemia are very vague. In particular this can be abnormal bleeding, weight loss, fatigue, excessive bruising, bone or joint pain, abdominal pain, infections and fever.

The list is not ultimate, but even from this list you can see that it is pretty non-specific.

That is why only further testing - more specific testing - can shed more light on the issue.

So, it all starts from a blood test. We will not dwell upon what exactly is the sign of leukemia in the blood test, because this is for specialists. But blood test is a must to investigate the issue deeper.

One of the typical questions that every leukemia patient makes is the leukemia life expectancy. This issue depends on the different factors: health, age, stage and severity of the disease, and treatment provided. Life expectancy amongst ALL and AML (for references check the types of leukemia mentioned above in the article) is short, because these types have a rapidly progressing nature. Life expectancy for CLL and CML can be from three to twenty years.

But, over the recent years statistics shows that life expectancy has grown. Never give up, you just need to find what exactly will help you. As the new researches are investigating the disease, this gives way to alternative methods of leukemia treatment.
